On Tuesday evening at the Mayor and City Council meeting, the Fort Hill football team was recognized with a Certificate of Recognition to the Fort Hill High School Football Team for capturing the Class 1A Maryland State Football Title. Great job again Fort Hill and we can't wait to see what you all do next season!

On Tuesday evening, the Fort Hill Unified Flag Football Team (Pictured right) was given a Certificate of Recognition by the Mayor and City Council for capturing the inaugural State Championship Gold Medal in their division in the Maryland Special Olympics Unified 5vs5 Flag Football Tournament. Congratulations to you all! Your hard work does not go unnoticed!

The Parks & Recreation Department unveiled the newly improved Duck Pond at Constitution Park yesterday afternoon. The City would like to thank Service Pro for their work as well as each department involved in making this possible.

The new duck house was provided by Fort Hill Highschool. It was built by Mr. Tim Morral's Shop 1, Shop 2, and Engineering and Design 2 Classes. We are extremely proud of the Fort Hill Students for a job well done and can't thank you enough for your hard work. Use those skills to help ducks all over the country!

Many citizens joined the Mayor and City Council to welcome Mr. Bradduck Waddles to the City of Cumberland and his new home at the duck pond! The trails were enjoyed and overall the area is a new and improved place to gather in the community!

The Mayor and City Council met for a retreat on Thursday, October 19th at the Fairfield Inn to discuss strategic goal planning for the City.  The retreat, facilitated by City Administrator Jeffrey Silka, offered council members the opportunity to brainstorm ideas in a more relaxed setting and provided the framework from which City Staff can formulate measurable goals surrounding topics such as neighborhood revitalization, fiscal responsibility, staff enhancement and communication.

The Mayor and Council Members Marchini and Frazier spent time with a special visitor to City Hall, Ambassador Kristjan Prikk, from Cumberland's sister city of Viljandi, Estonia.  Estonia is a small eastern European nation along the Baltic Sea south of Finland, sharing a border with Russia. Cumberland and Viljandi established the sister city relationship in 2013 and the Cumberland officials welcomed the opportunity to meet with the Ambassador.

On January 17, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department recognized members at the Mayor and City Council Meeting for outstanding performance. 

Pfc. Cassidy Lease was awarded the Medal of Valor for her actions that saved the life of a small child on an incident that occurred October 2022.

Sgt. Jeremy Robison and Pfc. Ashlee Stumbaugh were also recognized for their actions on the same incident with a Life Saver award.

Mayor Ray Morriss presented Life Saving Awards to Firefighter/CRT Hunter McCrobie and Firefighter/Paramedic Nick Miller for providing advanced life support during an emergency medical paramedic intercept call to a critically ill patient in Ridgeley, West Virginia on December 5, 2021.  The patient, Mrs. Tammy Courtney, has fully recovered; and she and her husband, Jason Courtney, met and thanked the ambulance crew during the presentation.

Mayor Brian Grim recently presented Landis Office Center with a plaque and official proclamation from the Mayor and City Council of Cumberland to congratulate owners Richard and Georgene McKenzie on the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of their business. The Cumberland office supply store was purchased by the McKenzie’s in 1964, and they have since grown it into a successful local landmark as a true family business, with their sons Todd and Jeff providing management assistance. The City of Cumberland commendation is the 1st in an initiative started by the Office of Economic Development to congratulate and thank long-standing businesses and business owners for their contributions to the city.
