Bicycle Patrol

The Bikes are used to help the officers get into the neighborhoods.  Used as a tool to help the officers relate to the kids, the officers can maneuver in tight spots.  The bikes are also used for special events and functions in the City.

In the Fall of 1996 the City of Cumberland hosted a 32-hour certified course in police bicycle patrol at Rocky Gap State Park. Fourteen law enforcement officers from the Cumberland Police Department and the Department of Natural Resources successfully participated in the International Police Mountain Bike Association approved course.

Since that time, Cumberland Police Officers have patrolled throughout the City of Cumberland on Police Edition 21 geared Schwinn cycles. Weather permitting, bike patrol is used as regular patrol, enhancement to regular patrol, and for special events such as festivals and parades.
