On behalf of the men and women of the Cumberland Police Department I am pleased to welcome you to our internet website. Our site has been developed to provide you with timely information on the department and its many programs. The department employs 50 sworn officers and 4 support personnel who serve a community of approximately 21,500 residents over 10 square miles.
The history of the Cumberland Police Department dates back more than 160 years. In March 1852 the City of Cumberland passed an ordinance to establish a formal “Night Watch” and appointed a Captain and six Watchmen as the first members of the newly-formed police department. Originally members were hired to ensure citizen safety along with protecting property, especially during the hours of darkness. In the beginning, the most important attribute for a potential Watchman was muscle.
Today our police department continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the community in providing a safe and secure environment for our citizens to live and work. We employ highly-trained officers and support staff that serve in Patrol, Administration and Investigation, including assignment at the Combined County Criminal Investigation (C3I) Unit and the C3I Narcotics Task Force.
There also exists various specialized positions within the department including the Cumberland Emergency Response Team (CERT), Crisis Negotiations Team, and the K-9 Unit. Resources are also dedicated to family safety and awareness including our Domestic Abuse Response Team along with providing Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education (DARE) instruction at area schools.
As part of our commitment to the concepts of community policing, the Cumberland Police Department continually seeks ways to make our officers more effective by placing them in close contact with the people we serve. Apart from the normal police patrols, the department deploys bicycles patrols, foot patrols, School Resource Officers to the eight city schools, and a Crime Prevention Officer who provides advice and direction to businesses and home owners in ways to protect themselves and their possessions. We also provide a Neighborhood Resource Officer that serves as a liaison between the neighborhoods and the police department in identifying and resolving matters of concern.

CUMBERLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT
The Cumberland Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of a program to obtain its first Accreditation status by verifying that it meets professional standards. Administered by the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards, which have been developed by examining law enforcement best practices from around the world.
As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at 5:30 PM at the Cumberland City Hall Council Room, 57 N. Liberty Street, Cumberland, MD, 21502. If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone. The public may call 301-759-6532 on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.
