2010 Census
The City of Cumberland Supports the 2010 Census
On April 1, 2010, every household in the City of Cumberland will receive a Census Form in the mail. The form asks for basic information on the name, sex, age, date of birth, race, ethnicity, relationship and housing tenure for all members of each household. This basic information is necessary for the U.S. Census Bureau to satisfy its constitutional requirement to count the nation's population and provide information necessary for the reapportionment of Congress. The form will require only minutes to complete and return. If your Census form is not returned, you will be visited by a Census official to obtain the information.
The Mayor and City Council of the City of Cumberland urges every citizen to complete and return their Census forms. A complete and accurate count of the City's population is essential to ensure that the City remains elligible for the maximum State and Federal funding support that it deserves. State and Federal funding support constitutes a significant portion of the City's annual budget. When City residents are not counted in the Census, the City and its taxpayers receive a smaller share of State and Federal funds as well as less representation at the State and Federal levels. Reductions in State and Federal funding could force the City to choose between cutting services or increasing local taxes to offset the losses. These losses also mean that the State and Federal taxes that you pay will be shifted to other communites, rather than helping reduce the cost of city services to local residents. Any undercount of the City's population only means that our citizens lose State and Federal represntation and considerable value from the taxes that we pay. Therefore the City urges every citizen to participate in the 2010 Census and be counted.
All information reported to the U.S. Census Bureau is kept confidential for 72 years. Not even the President of the U.S. can access confidential Census documents. Only recently did the public gain access to the 1930 Census records. Therefore, no citizen should feel that his/her privacy will be violated or compromised by participating in the 2010 Census. Please do your civic duty to the City and our nation by completing and returning the 2010 Census form. Your participation will ensure that you recieve the State and Federal representation and return on your tax investments that you deserve.
