City of Cumberland Historic Survey Project Set to Begin
Field work related to the Cumberland Historic Survey project will begin this weekend. The City of Cumberland is working with Historiecture LLC of LaVale to complete a Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties documentation and photography of structures within the Dingle, White Oaks Addition, Canada/Viaduct District, and the Jane Gates and Laura Hamilton Gates properties. Photographs will be taken from the public right of way, therefore no access will be requested from private property. The project is anticipated to last for several weeks, depending on weather conditions.
The City of Cumberland and the Cumberland Historic Preservation Commission have been awarded a Certified Local Government Subgrant through the Maryland Historical Trust to assist in the completion of this project. The Cumberland Historic Preservation Commission has determined that updates are needed to the over forty-year-old comprehensive inventory for the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties. Since the last update, additional structures or districts could now be considered for eligibility for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places. For more information on the National Register of Historic Places, please visit the National Park Service’s website at https://www.nps.gov/nr/faq.htm. The Historic Preservation Commission strives to enhance quality of life by safeguarding the historical and cultural heritage of Cumberland. Preservation is shown to strengthen the local economy, stabilize and improve property values, and foster civic beauty.
