[ARCHIVED] Emergency Removal of the Brunswick Hotel to Begin on Monday

The City of Cumberland has determined that emergency conditions exist at the former Brunswick Hotel, located at the corner of Baltimore Street and Queen City Pavement, stemming from the unstable state of the building structure.

City staff took the appropriate measures today to secure the surrounding areas and consulted a structural engineer and contractor to determine the best course of action to address the situation.

According to Jeff Rhodes, City Administrator, a routine staff inspection of the Brunswick location determined that a significant structural failure had recently occurred.   "As a result of today’s inspection, the City took quick action to consult a structural engineer and engage a qualified contractor to determine the best method of abating the emergency," stated Rhodes.

Work will begin Monday morning to remove the structure and the public is advised to avoid the area during this time. In order to further ensure the public’s safety, the adjacent sidewalk and the Queen City Drive underpass will remain closed until further notice.
