[ARCHIVED] City of Cumberland Issues Statement on Condition of Virginia Avenue Underpass

The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland has been notified by several citizens of their concerns with the CSX Transportation, Inc. (CSX) bridge that spans over Virginia Avenue.  At the direction of the Mayor and City Council, City staff has been in contact with CSX representatives about the condition of the bridge.  CSX has advised that the bridge structure and foundations are inspected annually for structural integrity and that those inspections have returned satisfactory reports at this time.  The bridge over Virginia Avenue is a valuable asset to CSX's business and they recognize its value to the City of Cumberland as well.  CSX will continue to monitor the condition of this bridge as required by the Federal Railroad Administration and apprise the City if its condition requires remedial action.

Questions regarding this matter may be directed to Robert Smith, City Engineer, at 301-759-660
